Virginia Tick-borne Disease Working Group – Next Meeting

NatCapLyme is pleased to announce that HB 2008, legislation we helped pass in 2023 (see below) has resulted in the convening of the Virginia Tick-borne Disease Working Group. Several meetings have been held and the minutes of those meetings may be found on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall website (https://townhall.virginia.gov/). The purpose of the working group is to make recommendations to the Governor for reducing the occurrence and impact of tick-borne diseases in the Commonwealth by November 1, 2023.
If you are interested in participating in the next meeting go to https://townhall.virginia.gov/ and select “meetings” in the menu options on the left side of homepage and then choose “Virginia Department of Health” from the agency drop down list that appears on the following page. Anyone interested is welcome to attend the meeting, virtually or in person, and to listen to or offer your comments. You will also find a link that will allow you to attend the next meeting of the Group on July 13th. The purpose will be to discuss and develop recommendations in accordance with HB2008, printed below.

VIRGINIA ACTS OF ASSEMBLY — 2023 SESSION
CHAPTER 120 An Act to require the Department of Health to develop recommendations for reducing the occurrence and impact of tick-borne diseases in the Commonwealth. HB 2008] Approved March 21, 2023 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: 1. § 1. That the Department of Health shall convene a work group composed of representatives of health care providers, public health experts, organizations representing individuals living with or impacted by tick-borne diseases, and other appropriate stakeholders to study and make recommendations for reducing the occurrence and impact of tick-borne diseases in the Commonwealth. The work group’s report shall include recommendations for (i) increasing public awareness of tick-borne diseases and strategies for preventing tick-borne diseases, (ii) educating health care providers and the public about the importance of and need for early diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne diseases, (iii) improving public health surveillance and data collection related to tick-borne diseases, and (iv) developing and implementing strategies to reduce tick populations and reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of tick-borne diseases in the Commonwealth. The work group shall report its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly by November 1, 2023.
