Surrounded by legislators and community leaders, Governor Bob McDonnell ceremonially signed today HB1933, the Lyme Disease Testing Information Disclosure Act of 2013. The legislation makes Virginia the first state in the nation to require health care providers to notify those tested for Lyme disease that current laboratory testing can produce false negatives, especially in the early stage of the disease.

The Virginia legislature has proclaimed May “Lyme Disease Awareness Month.” For several years, Governor Bob McDonnell has made the fight against Lyme disease a priority. This year, he supported and signed The Lyme DiseaseTesting Information Disclosure Act of 2013, a major milestone in the fight against Lyme disease. Virginia is now the first state to require health care providers to notify anyone tested for Lyme that current laboratory testing can produce false negatives, especially in the early stage of the disease. To commemorate May as Lyme Disease Awareness Month, Governor McDonnell lit up the Governor’s Mansion in lime green last night, May 16th.

Governor Bob McDonnell has made the fight against Lyme disease a priority in his efforts to protect the health of Virginia citizens. To further that effort, the governor is recognizing May as Lyme Disease Awareness Month and will light the Executive Mansion lime green Thursday, May 16 to commemorate the observance.

National Capital Lyme Disease Association (NatCapLyme) today announced that the Virginia House of Delegates passed landmark legislation providing for the disclosure of information to people tested for Lyme disease. This bill now heads to the Governor for his signature.

There is a Lyme haze hanging over the 2013 General Assembly this session. Seldom does a Bill generate as much of an outpouring as SB971 and its companion Bill HB1933. The Bill has pitted the Lyme disease community against Virginia physicians in a controversy surrounding a patient’s right to receive information in a written disclosure pertaining to the inefficacy of Lyme antibody tests. The battle that has ensued has the Lyme Community crying “Foul!” and raises serious issues regarding the ability of politicians to remain neutral in the face of pressure from large lobbyists and campaign donors.

A new bill, introduced in the Virginia State Senate by Dick Black, Senator, 13th District and in the House of Delegates by Barbara Comstock, Delegate, 34th District proposes to ensure that Virginia residents are adequately educated and informed of the limitations in the existing serologic tests used to detect Lyme disease.
